Our energy portfolio refers to how OPPD generates electricity for our customers and is core to everything we do. OPPD’s decarbonization journey began in 2001, when we installed our first wind turbine in Valley, Nebraska. Since then, we have made significant changes to our energy portfolio without compromising reliability, resiliency, or cost of service to our customers.

The power industry continues to evolve rapidly, and our teams are frequently evaluating advances in renewable energy and emerging technologies, such as battery storage. The Energy Portfolio pathway will employ a data-driven approach to study actionable strategies that eliminate or significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions for power generation while still meeting our customers’ energy needs. We’ll evaluate each strategy thinking about:

  • Reliability and resiliency. How do we further integrate low-carbon energy solutions while maintaining system reliability? OPPD is committed to keeping the lights on. We’ll also look at how continued integration of renewable energy impacts system resiliency, which is the grid’s ability to quickly recover from any significant weather events and minimize impacts of unplanned outages.
  • Economics, rates, and emissions. We are committed to keeping rates affordable for all customers. We’ll evaluate the relative investment and operational cost of low-carbon energy scenarios to greenhouse gas emission reductions to prioritize strategies that benefit the environment and keep rates affordable.
